About Us
Building a better community, one Black Belt at a time
Yuen’s Family Martial Arts has been serving the Tri-Cities area since 1987, originally under the name Yuen’s Institute of Taekwondo. We take pride in helping hundreds of students achieve black belt excellence. Which, to us, means instilling discipline, honesty, modesty, and empathy. We ensure our students understand that martial arts is about more than just kicking and punching; it is about becoming the best version of oneself.
Our Leadership
Mr. Hart
Hart has been a student of Master Yuen since 2012 and has been teaching and instructing at Yuen’s for over a decade. Martial arts is one of his greatest passions, and his training extends beyond Taekwondo to include disciplines such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing.
Hart views himself as a lifelong student of martial arts and is always eager to continue learning so he can better support and guide the students he teaches. In addition to earning his 3rd degree black belt, Hart is also proud to have completed his Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Simon Fraser University.
Hart credits much of his success in both martial arts and academics to the discipline, confidence, and community he developed through Yuen’s.
Ms. Emily
Emily has a passion for martial arts ever since she joined Yuen’s 20 years ago when she and her father joined the family beginner class together. Not only does she have a 3rd degree black belt in Taekwondo, but Emily also trains in Muay Thai, boxing, and kickboxing and loves anything do with punching and kicking with a side of double nunchucks.
Throughout the years Emily has made countless friends with other students and has been involved with many community events that the school has organized in the past from teddy bear picnics, to being a part of the Christmas party demos, to participating/judging in tournaments.
Emily is passionate about creating an environment where students of all ages can build confidence, discipline, and lifelong friendships through martial arts and can’t wait for everything the future has in store for the school.
Mr. Justin
Justin has been part of the Yuen’s community since 1993. He earned his black belt from Mr. Yuen in 1996 and still trains at the academy regularly today. Justin’s connection to Yuen’s spans three generations of his family — his brother, mother, sister, and now his children have all trained here. Justin also served as an instructor at Yuen’s from 1995 to 2000.
Justin lives nearby and remains closely connected to many of the friendships formed through the academy, including two of his closest friends whom he met at Yuen’s in 1993 and still trains and runs with weekly.
Today Justin focuses primarily on Yueng Chuan and is excited about helping build an even stronger community around the school and martial arts.
Mr. Yuen
Mr. Yuen has dedicated his life to serving the Tri-Cities and giving back to the community he has always been a part of. Using martial arts as a vehicle for self-improvement, he aims to instill the youth of Coquitlam with the skills they need to become confident, respectful, and outgoing.
His martial arts journey began as a child with Judo, which eventually led to a lifelong passion for Taekwondo. Over the decades, Mr. Yuen has immersed himself in various disciplines, embracing the vast diversity the martial arts world has to offer. He currently holds a 9th-degree black belt in Taekwondo, a black sash in Yeung Chuan, and a Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Additionally, he has trained extensively in Small Circle Jujitsu, Modern Arnis, and Balintawak.
Mr. Yuen still loves to teach, and remains an active member of the community he has passed over to Mr. Hart, Ms. Emily, and Mr. Justin.
